GLOBAL What is COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness? It refers to the likelihood that a coronavirus shot will work in people. Two vaccine makers have said that preliminary results from their late-stage studies suggest their experimental vaccines are strongly protective. Moderna says its vaccine appears nearly 95 per cent effective, following a similar announcement by Pfizer.

UK A top British family planning organisation is changing its name to distance itself from its founder’s troubling opinions. Marie Stopes International said it will be known as MSI Reproductive Choices. Stopes, who founded Britain’s first birth control clinic in 1921, supported eugenics, opposed interracial marriage and advocated sterilisation of people considered unfit for parenthood.
