JAPAN Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, has resigned because a chronic illness has resurfaced. In a country once known for its short-tenured PMs, the departure marks the end of an unusual era of stability that saw the 65-year-old Japanese leader strike up strong ties with the US and India, even as Abe’s ultra-nationalism riled the Koreas and China.

NEW ZEALAND The white supremacist who slaughtered 51 worshippers at two New Zealand mosques in March 2019 was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The 29-year-old Australian, Brenton Harrison Tarrant, fired semi-automatic weapons and livestreamed his attack on Facebook.
