Iremember Dr A.J.T. Johnsingh from nearly 30 years ago when he was doing his doctorate on the wild dogs of Bandipur and discussing tigers with me. In this compilation of writings, he trails the area where Jim Corbett worked. Corbett cast a spell over generations of wildlifers, including Dr Johnsingh, with his enthralling words. Johnsingh is not quite in the same class, though there are some amazing descriptions of his early years and his study on the wild dogs of Bandipur. This is when he is most eloquent and passionate. For example: "I peeped out to see what it was. Before my eyes was my first wild tiger, ears laid flat, snarling and growling fiercely. It stood for a few seconds, looking around.... I froze behind the tree, and the tiger retracted into the dense growth...."

Johnsingh is a great walker. He must have walked with over 200 forest officers, training them in the fine art of interpreting the language of the forest. "I was in my early 30s then," he recalls in one instance, "and had the confidence that I could run and escape elephants. This confidence...was shattered...
