Politician, agriculturist, cricket administrator—and for long, a ‘PM-in-waiting’—Sharad Pawar celebrates his 75th birthday with what promises to be a tell-all autobiography, On My Terms: From the Grass­roots to the Corridors of Power (Publisher: Speaking Tiger). The Congressman-turned-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)  boss remains sprightly despite his ailment, and shows no signs of hanging up his boots. He spoke to Bula Devi in Delhi. Excerpts:

How do you rate Narendra Modi as prime minister?

It’s too early to assess his performance. It looks like he is a workaholic; he has no other responsibilities. But running the country is different from running a state. Different states have different issues. The prime minister requires a good team, but barring some of his colleagues like Sus­hma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadk­ari and Rajnath Singh, I don’t  see anyone. It seems the BJP has limitations at the nat­ional level. Unless and until...
