This year’s Amarnath yatra seems to be jinxed. If it’s not the weather, then it’s the ‘natural’ icicle Shiv lingam—the focal point of the yatra. The Amarnath Board is now facing down flak that the lingam this year was "man-made". Sources told Outlook a Maharashtra team had indeed been taken to the Amarnath cave to shape the lingam. But that’s after this year’s relatively high temperatures precluded a natural lingam. T.N. Ganju, Kashmir’s leading Shaivite scholar says, "This is no time to hold the yatra, the snow hasn’t melted yet, politics is wrecking the basic concept of the pilgrimage."
