Ponnani, some 140 km north of Kochi, is a coastal municipality in the Muslim-dominated north Kerala district of Malappuram. The constituency has been a prestige seat of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for a long time now. This time the poll battle is evenly matched here as the pro-Left camp whipped up sentiments on American imperialism and the Israeli attacks on Palestine. In the process, issues of livelihood and infrastructure were pushed to the background.

Sitting MP E. Ahamed, who’s contesting from neighbouring Malappuram constituency this time, has focused more on his contribution to the entire district.
