When Statecraft Is All About Catching Graft
The old order is slowly yielding place to the new in Punjab. And the recently elected chief minister, Capt Amarinder Singh of the Congress, is trying to make sure that one ‘good custom’ does not corrupt the world. The Patiala royal scion has struck again and this time too his target is none other than his predecessor and political rival, Akali Dal’s Parkash Singh Badal.

The Captain has released two letters written by Badal as chief minister to the prime minister, pleading the case of now discredited Punjab Public Commission chairman R.P. Singh Sidhu’s elevation to the UPSC.

Sidhu is currently in Patiala jail on corruption charges.

The letters—found during raids on the premises of the Punjab Public Service Commission in Patiala—have confirmed Badal’s links to Sidhu. The letters were with the government but following the resignation of Justice A.S. Garg—appointed to inquire into the scandal—the CM decided to make them public.
