When Bhaiya Turns Mod
It’s as if suddenly the world is not enough for pampered Delhiites. They’re heading eastward or ‘Trans-Yamuna’ as the locals call it. To what used to be a dot on the ‘Bhaiya’ state that supercilious other-siders were so fond of ridiculing. But today the unlikely acronym of Noida or the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority is fast getting its back at Delhi’s ‘where-do-you-live?’ snobbery by becoming as fashionable as its metropolitan cousin some 13-odd km east of the putative Eden. Reason: real estate is cheap and therefore a lot of new money is being poured in here via the MNC route. Another reason for this new respectability is that this Delhi-UP border area has recently been connected by a hi-tech flyway. All this coupled with a trickling exodus of Delhiites that’s making Noida the new address in town, er, well in the inter-state National Capital Region. Sector 18 is a sort of Consumer Mecca amid this urban reclamation and is landmarked by a gigantic M of the three-storey McDonald’s...
