Men head every Indian sports federation barring women’s hockey. These veteran officials should be looking towards India’s sporting ladies for saving face.Though Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi are indeed potential medal-winners, the bulk of the hopes of at least making it to the finals in their respective events lie more on women.

Just days before the opening of the Athens Olympic Games, Leander and Bhupathi played their first ATP Masters in two years when they won as a pair in the Toronto Masters. Besides playing together, they had been training as a team too. And this is enough to expect a good performance from the duo.

Shooters Anjali Bhagwat, Seema Shurur and Deepali Deshpande and long jumper Anju George are also world-class. But winning and staying in the world ranking are two entirely different things. Many athletes have achieved the first but faltered at the second. They have to justify their ranking in the Olympic arena. This is what matters most.

There is a lot of media attention on Anjali Bhagwat. Even the corporate world has dug into the gravy....
