With the Cauvery waters issue flooding the news again, Karnataka’s new Congress CM Dharam Singh has enough on his plate. He recently fired off a letter to PM Manmohan Singh saying there was no need to convene the Cauvery River Authority meeting at present. Obviously, an attempt to deflect political pressure from Tamil Nadu, which is demanding release of Cauvery water immediately for its delta region crop. The letter explained why Karnataka cannot release water, pleading the dire water situation, the storage position in the reservoirs and the people’s irrigation, drinking water requirements. He also hoped the Congress-led Centre would keep the interests of Karnataka’s farmers at heart—a moot hope, given the Dravidian iron in the UPA soul.
