What is the major achievement of the new Tanakpur accord?

Tanakpur has defined Indo-Nepal ties in concrete terms. The bilateral cooperation from now onwards will be based on the principle of equality and mutual benefit.

There is a feeling that Nepal’s view of India as a larger-than-life figure has curtailed the development of good neighbourliness.

We must be good neighbours. And good neighbourliness in this present day and age means treating each other on the principle of equality and mutual benefit.

What precipitated the breakthrough on Tanakpur?

The willingness on the part of both countries to recognise each other’s national interests and commitment to work for the benefit of their peoples.

Nepal seems to have done its homework while preparing its official agenda. Has India been more accommodating too?

I’d prefer to put it this way: India has been more responsive to Nepal’s aspirations.
