Be it out of necessity, the UPA regime is planning to haul NDA deals over the coals

If the UPA government has an Achilles heel, it's the fact that some members of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's cabinet—led by railway minister Laloo Prasad Yadav—have cases against them and are, therefore, in the "tainted" club. With the Opposition demanding the resignation of these ministers, the UPA government has decided to turn the tables: to systematically investigate corruption instances in the previous government as well as ensure that cases—whether in the courts, a commission of inquiry or with investigating agencies—don't gather dust. As a Congress leader put it, it's the only way the NDA can be checkmated on the issue.

So, last month defence minister Pranab Mukherjee, HRD minister Arjun Singh, home minister Shivraj Patil, urban development minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and MoS for science and technology Kapil Sibal—all from the Congress—met informally. The last named was included because of his legal background and his role as the Congress spokesperson in the run-up to the elections when he highlighted some of the scams in the NDA government.
