This NRI's Real Success Story Unfolds Back Home In Bhagalpur
His is the warmth that somewhat diffuses the winter cold. Every November, Dr Giriwar Narain Das, an NRI living in the US, returns home to Bhagalpur for a period of around four months. It isn't just a periodic, ritual visit to his roots. He comes on a mission. One that's driven by a desire to right a wrong he grew up with. His goal: to educate the underprivileged in his hometown. It's a dream he's remained committed to, and over the years, his eyesight may have become weak but not his zeal. "I want everyone in and around my village to become educated and self-reliant," says the 71-year-old doctor who's weathered some rough times himself in his youth.

Born in Daryapur panchayat, 80 km away from Bhagalpur in Munger district, Das grew up learning the value of education. "I had to walk a long way each day to reach the school located at far-off Kharagpur village. As the area was crime-prone, very few ventured to send their children to school for fear of a kidnapping for ransom. The girls, particularly, remained illiterate.
