'The VHP Should Not Build The Ram Mandir'
On June 18, representatives of the four major peeths—Sringeri, Dwarka, Jyoti and Puri—met in Delhi. Among the issues discussed at the Chatush Peeth (the meeting of the four peeths) was the construction of the Ram mandir at Ayodhya. The meeting was attended by two Shankaracharyas—Swami Nischalanand and Swami Swaroopanand—who were of the view that the temple should not be built according to the VHP plan. They were critical of the pre-fabricated temple that is being built and questioned the manner in which the VHP has collected funds to build the temple. The Shankaracharyas have their own plans of building a Rs 100-crore temple at Ayodhya and pointed out that the VHP should cooperate with the holy men rather than build a temple of their own design. Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of the Dwarka and Jyoti peeths, who presided over the meeting, spoke to Ajith Pillai. Excerpts:
