The Statue of Unity is a flawed idea. It isn’t just a statue, but a secretariat in itself. No authority would grant clearance for a str­uc­t­ure of this magnitude to be drilled in the middle of a river, in such close proximity to a huge dam. The only reason the statue is com­ing up is to satisfy Modi’s fancy ideas on promoting tourism. Environmental/imp­act ass­essment clearances were indeed needed.
