The Kanchi seer comes up with a workable solution but will the VHP or the Muslims accept it?

No one, not even The Almighty, it seemed, could resolve the Ayodhya tangle. But the Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya, Swami Jayendra Saraswati, is not a seer who gives up hope. Last week the saffron-clad Shankaracharya flew into Delhi and offered a compromise formula to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas and the Muslim community. "A glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel," is how an aide of the Shankaracharya put it.

The seer’s formula put to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and the VHP on March 5 was this: the VHP will maintain status quo on the disputed site at Ayodhya and abide by the court’s verdict on the title suit over the claim on the disputed land. In exchange, it will be allowed to perform a symbolic bhoomi puja on March 15 and, subject to AIMPLB approval and political consensus, be handed over the ‘undisputed’ 43...
