The Supreme Court has held that confessions before investigating officers by those accused in drugs cases under the narcotics law can’t be used to convict them. It said any officer who has the authority to “extract” confessions is a police officer under the narcotics law. The ruling could have a bearing on the drugs case against Rhea Chakraborty.

Assam has introduced a “transgender” category on the application form for the state’s civil services exam. It has received 42 applications in this category so far. The UPSC has already introduced the option in its recruitment process, and Assam is likely the first state to do so.
