Whose Gandhi?

  • Gandhiji set up the Navajivan Trust in 1919, the Gujarat Vidyapeeth in 1920 and the Harijan Sevak Sangh in 1932
  • They each had their tasks cut out and were expected to engage with each other and not counter each other
  • An exercise began in the 1950s to compile all of Gandhi’s writings and make them available to readers
  • The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi concluded in 1994 with the publication of the 100th volume
  • The NDA government, in 1998, decided to re-edit the volumes, raising concerns about the government’s intent. Mistakes and exclusions marred the project.
  • The recent happenings in the Navajivan Trust and Gujarat Vidyapeeth have once again raised questions on the involvement of the BJP-RSS combine in running the trusts
