Does the Congress have a script for UP or is it just a one-man act? Rahul Gandhi’s trip to Amethi-Rae Bareli last week, when he famously declared, "This (Mulayam Singh) government must go", certainly created ripples. It was also a portent of things to come in UP, the Congress hoping to stage a revival and take on the ruling SP. A senior Congress leader, though, privately admitted that while "the khichdi is cooking, all the ingredients aren’t still in".

The Lok Sabha results have shown that the Congress has done well only in states where it was into alliances. The obvious route in UP then is to tie up with the BSP. But Mayawati is a tough bargainer. Sources say Sonia Gandhi herself is handling the BSP leader now. Ajit Singh of the RLD has also sent feelers, wanting to ditch Mulayam and go with the Congress. But the problem is his Jat votebank is in conflict with Mayawati’s Dalits. So can the Congress...
