The New, New Outsiders
After a prolonged affair with political xenophobia, the Shiv Sena is now in the grip of an updated, mutant strain of the old virus. All these years it stood for regional machismo, targeting non-Maharashtrians for pushing the Marathi manoos out of jobs and geographical space in the city’s congested suburbs. However, with assembly polls next year, the Sena is doing a turnaround, with a new (and equally vile) formula to woo the non-Maharashtrian votebank. Its ‘Mee Marathi’ (I’m Marathi) battle cry has been abandoned for ‘Mee Mumbaikar’ (I’m a Mumbaikar), as Uddhav Thackeray gives an opportunistic spin to the Sena’s old obsession of opposing the influx of migrants from other states. There’ll be a new cut-off date though—only those who came to Mumbai after 1995 will now be "outsiders".

In its new avatar, the Sena claims it has no problems with non-Maharashtrian settlers who had come to the city before...
