Arch-rival Mulayam Singh Yadav is sure giving chief minister Mayawati sleepless nights—he hasn’t let a single opportunity to upset the BSP-BJP applecart go by. That, perhaps, is the reason behind Mayawati’s sudden decision to work hard to keep the coalition going. It was on her initiative that L.K. Advani agreed to share the dais with BSP supremo Kanshi Ram, in a BSP-sponsored rally in Lucknow on September 28.
The BJP has impressed upon Mayawati that if the alliance soured, the SP boss would be the main gainer. All this becomes more intriguing as the court deadline (September 23) nears for filing a reworked petition on Ayodhya (the last writ had been thrown out). Mayawati has promised a decision that wouldn’t annoy "any section".
