The Forest Fire Spreads
It’s not even taken a month for sparks to become flames in Jharkhand. The controversial domicile policy, which gives preference in appointments to Class III and IV government jobs to those whose ancestors’ names figure in the 1932 land records, has claimed at least 10 lives and has bitterly divided the state along tribal and migrant lines. Pro- and anti-domicile policy groups have clashed on the streets and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) has had to stage flag marches to bring the flagrant situation under control. Chief minister Babulal Marandi’s decision to implement the domicile policy was intended to woo the tribals. But he has had to face stiff opposition from his partners in the state NDA. Urban development minister and senior Samata Party leader Baccha Singh, who has consistently been at the forefront of the agitation, has been very severe in his criticism of the chief minister.
