True to form, RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav’s ‘maharailla’ took over the streets of Patna, in all its unadulterated machismo, with well-oiled lathis and raw male power stalking every corner and alley. RJD supporters, in their thousands, thronged the Bihar capital’s historic Gandhi Maidan in support of Laloo’s call: "BJP bhagao, desh bachao
...Bush bhagao, duniya bachao
." Such shows are, of course, not complete without the attendant violence. A BJP leader, S.N. Sinha, died in a shoot-out ahead of the rally, a minister was charged with kidnapping him, and one of Laloo’s relatives saw his house being set on fire. Shops remained shut with traders alleging extortion. But the huge rally, in Laloo’s words, was a huge success and a befitting answer to the VHP’s trishul diksha campaigns.
