  • Last year cricketer Harbhajan Singh, accused of sled-ging and slapping a teammate, won the award. The PM had recommended his case.
  • Wrestler Sushil Kumar and boxer Vijender Singh, who won bronze medals at the Beijing Olympics, were assured Padmas but left out.
  • Hashmatullah Khan, a nondescript shawl promoter, was lucky last year. This year, Ghulam Mohd Mir, facing criminal charges, got a Padma.
  • Over the years journalist P. Sainath, former CEC James Lyngdoh, former judge of the Delhi high court Rajindar Sachar and historian Romila Thapar have refused the award.
