The government and Opposition parties heaved a sigh of relief last week when the Supreme Court vacated its stay on elections to 65 Rajya Sabha seats and directed the Election Commission to announce a revised schedule for the polls. Indications are that the new election date could be towards the end of the month, possibly June 28. While vacating the stay order, the bench placed a caveat that the court’s final decision on open ballot system and domicile status of candidates will be binding. Which in turn could embarrass a few people, including a certain Assam ‘resident’.
According to the tentative schedule, the nominations can be filed until June 17. The last day of withdrawal could be June 21 and the election itself held a week later, sources said.
