The film has run into so much trouble. Are you superstitious about it now?
It's been a nightmare right from day one. We started off with catastrophes on the sets, then the Bharat Shah arrest, I don't even feel like looking back at it.

And then you also fell out with Ismail Darbar?
He left the music midway though he did compose all the songs.

Who's replaced him?
Monty, Pyarelalji's nephew. He's done one theme and I think it's one of the most beautiful pieces of music composed in Hindi cinema.

Didn't the inevitable comparison with classics scare you?
I've felt this story at a personal level. It is the director's vision that operates in every story. Comparisons thus at that level aren't frightening.

A dream come true?
Indeed, if you discount all the nightmares we faced.

Your expectation from Devdas?
That it should touch audiences as much as the story has touched me. The story itself has an inbred energy which pulls at your heartstrings.
