At 81, his unflagging energy could shame the celluloid fire of Rang de Basanti. But M.S. Swaminathan, father of the green revolution and now chairman, National Commission on Farmers, is deeply sad that on Baisakhi day, the front-page news that greets him in the morning is of farmers' suicides. Excerpts from an interview:

What is the farmer's policy about?
We need to reinstate pride in the profession of farmers. Almost 60 years after independence, how many farmers get Padma awards? Farmers, mainly subsistence ones, are the backbone of our livelihood security system. But there is no evidence that a policy is shaped by their realities. So our fourth report suggests that the draft policy must move away from measuring agricultural progress in terms of foodgrain productivity and growth, and do it in terms of the growth in net income of farm families, and shift from an approach of patronage to partnership. The action plan should have four major components: soil health enhancement, irrigation, credit and insurance enhancement, and eradication of technology fatigue...
