Very Hungry Markets

Leading foreign collectors, including the owner of Christie's and the head of Louis Vuitton, have paid astronomical prices for Subodh Gupta's works in the last three years. Just last month, two of his works went for Rs 1.86 crore and Rs 82 lakh-well over their reserve price-at a Sotheby's auction in London. Some recent sales:
  • Across Seven Seas sold in 2006 for Rs 4.5 crore
  • Sunday Lunch sold in Feb '08 for Rs 1.86 crore
  • Untitled sculpture of family on Vespa sold by Sotheby's in 2007 for Rs 1.11 crore
  • A Very Hungry God sold to Francois Pinault, owner of Christie's, in 2006 for undisclosed sum
  • Untitled 3 sold to Bernard Arnault, head of Louis Vuitton, in 2005 for Rs 49 lakh
  • Untitled canvas sold in online auction for over Rs 1 crore
  • Untitled mixed media work sold at Christie's auction in 2007 for Rs 87 lakh
  • Fire sculpture sold by Sotheby's in Feb '08 for Rs 82 lakh
