On January 28, the media was summoned at short notice to the DMK headquarters in Chennai around noon. There, the whimsical but very ratio­nal man referred to as Kalaignar (artist) gave quite a twist to the sibling rivalry between sons Stalin and Azhagiri, when he said the latter woke him up to say the younger brother (and heir apparent) will not live beyond a few months. That is why, he said, he had to suspend his elder son.

Events quickly proceeded, with elder son Azhagiri reacting with an emotion-choked statement about his father’s birthday gift to him. At the time of writing, a weak rapprochement attempt was shaping up from Azhagiri’s side, in an air rife with rumour, but not before the strongman’s birthday, Jan­uary 30, was used for a show of strength in his Madurai stronghold.

T.K.S. Elangovan, DMK organising secretary, attempts to make light of it. Focusing on such events misses the point about the dmk’s social base and resilience, he says. “Ups and downs are part of politics but we are here to stay and fight”....
