Temple Of The Gods

In god level of hero worship, the playfield is a temple—at least that’s how it is down South. The latest is a shrine dedicated to M.G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalitha on a 12-acre site near Madurai. Life-size bronze statues of the two AIADMK icons sit in the middle of this large multi-pillared hall, where priests poured holy water on the finial, the dome-like structure on the canopy, as chants of holy hymns rang the air when CM K. Palaniswami and deputy CM O. Panneerselvam unveiled the temple and performed an aarti. The shrine is a reminder that elections are within eyeshot and it’s time for the pilgrimage that includes a Phoenix-themed memorial on the site of Jayalalitha’s mausoleum on Marina beach and her Poes Garden home in Chennai.
