Watching Jhoom Barabar Jhoom makes for a bizarre, outlandish experience. Here’s a film that knows what it wants to do, but is so cocksure that it fails in the basic job of connecting with the audience. Take that scene where Bobby and Abhishek ride a scooter similar to the one their dads rode in Sholay while singing Yeh dosti. I found the audience curiously unaffected by this play of nostalgia. The film’s opening premise is like Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise—two people, ie Abhishek and Preity, who are engaged to Lara and Bobby respectively, fall in love. However, the vibes between Abhishek and Preity are more like bickering siblings. Moreover, this wisp of a theme deserved a simple narrative.
