Is the Angry Young Man you created patterned on your own life?
Creative writing is autobiographical. I may or may not have experienced all the situations, but they are a part of my emotional experience.

Some say that you created Amitabh Bachchan.
Amitabh Bachchans are not created, they are born. His talent is so immense that we've only seen the tip of the iceberg.

But it must have felt odd to see your alter-ego spring alive on screen?
There was a complete rapport between us—I never wrote a line for him which I feared might not come out right because of a wrong intonation or mistiming.

Are you still the Angry Young Man?
That was 25 years ago, everything has changed, including me.

Since Hindi cinema is for the young, by the young, do you feel your best days in films are behind you?
You can stop growing creatively the day you think you have all the answers.

So what are you doing now?
I have got back from song-writing to script-writing with Khilone.
