24 Hours In Life Of Anand Kumar: Golf, Kishore Kumar And Managing Jails

Anand Kumar was a regular cricketer in his college days. Now, he has to find time for golf during weekends. But that is und­erstandable. As the DG (prisons), Kumar is charge of a state which has the country’s highest number of prisoners. But the 1988 batch IPS officer has found his own way of juggling work with personal commitments.

Beginning the day at 7 with a glass of lukewarm water mixed with lime and honey, Kumar hits the gym at about 8 for about an hour. “In case, I miss it, I make sure that I spend that much time doing stretching exercises, treadmill, push-ups and yoga.” A fitness freak, Kumar graduated from Hansraj College, Delhi. He spends about an hour reading newspapers in the morning. Breakfast, he says, “is quite frugal”—normally upma, dalia, poha etc. He reaches office around 10:30 and till 3, he is occupied with meetings, presentations and clearing files.  

The break comes in the form of lunch at around 3, which mainly consists of 2 chapatis or a bowl of rice, dal and some vegetables. Post lunch, it is...
