In a twist to the Malegaon blast case involving Hindutva extremists, special public prosecutor Rohini Salian caused a stir late last month by revealing that a senior official of the National Invest­igation Agency (NIA) had asked her to go soft on the accused shortly after the NDA government came to power. Evidence against the accused had been gathered by the anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of Mumbai police, then headed by the late Hemant Karkare. Karkare had apparently consulted supercop Julio Ribeiro, 86, former police commissioner of Mumbai and DGP Gujarat and Punjab. He spoke on the controversy to Prachi Pinglay-Plumber in Mumbai:
