The Sangh parivar has found a new hero in the fake encounter accused cop Vanzara

"Dekho, dekho kaun aya, Gujarat ka sher aya" (Look, look, who has come/ it is the lion of Gujarat)

This slogan is usually reserved for Chief Minister Narendra Modi. But when DIG D.G. Vanzara, along with the two other IPS officers, all arrested in the fake encounters case, was brought to the chief metropolitan magistrate's court in Ahmedabad on May 8, these officers were lionised by VHP and Bajrang Dal volunteers. Hundreds had gathered carrying banners that read "Sohrabuddin is a criminal, long live the Gujarat police".

Will Vanzara be elevated to a Hindu icon? Perhaps not yet, but there is no missing the heroic status being piled on to him by the saffronites. Interestingly, the accolades are only for the son of the soil Vanzara, not for the two other officers who are "outsiders". In an atmosphere reminiscent of the 2002 riots, mediapersons going to Illol, Vanzara's village, have been attacked twice. "Vanzara is innocent.
