Secretary of state-designate Condoleezza Rice is expected to visit India after her senate confirmation to solidify the Indo-US bilateral agenda. The visit should set in motion a series of important exchanges, including a possible trip to Washington by PM Manmohan Singh in the summer and a long-awaited return visit by President George Bush in the winter. Officials hope the flurry of high-level meetings will give impetus to bilateral ties, with both sides securing political space without the shadow of Pakistan. Significantly, India will be one of the first countries on Rice’s itinerary. There’s also talk of more technology transfer in key areas like civilian nuclear and space programmes. In the new term, Rice is reportedly clearer about the priorities in this part of South Asia.
