His Many Frontlines

THIS is a tribute to an Indian army chief who will be remembered long after many of us pass into oblivion as a warm and affectionate individual who was above malice or pettiness. As I watched the last rites of General Krishnaswamy Sundarji being performed on February 10, I could not help feeling happy that he had been relieved from the unhappy state he had been in for so many months. Most of us who had the privilege of knowing him well, and shared the warmth of his friendship, will always cherish his vibrant personality, vitality, vision and total commitment. No matter what the company or the occasion; no matter what the subject - mechanised warfare or bird-watching, nuclear issues or information technology - Gen. Sundarji was totally at ease. And impressed one and all by his knowledge of the subject, and his sparkling articulation.

He will be remembered primarily for dragging us out from the complacency of the stereotype to the challenge of the unorthodox. Our middle-level military leaders came under his dynamic influence when he was the commandant of the College of...
