Is L.K. Advani willing to take charge of the BJP and does Vajpayee want it?

For a section in the BJP, it's not just a change of guard. It's a whole new look. Conscious of its rapidly declining image, this faction is keen to replace BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy with a more dynamic, charismatic and hardline name—L.K. Advani.

As per the plan, Advani would bring with him a team of second-rung BJP leaders such as Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj and Ananth Kumar to revive the party. Coincidentally, those tipped to be in the revival team are also referred to as the 'Advani camp' in the BJP.

Currently the BJP office on Delhi's Ashoka Road can boast of no office-bearer of eminence. Narendra Modi was made chief minister and Govindacharya is still sulking. Even the present crop—Krishnamurthy and general-secretary Maya Singh have recently been given cabinet berths. The real heavyweights, of course, are already in the government.

Party sources claim it was rural development minister Naidu who first proposed that Advani lead the BJP. He is said to have suggested this to Vajpayee. He was told to "ask Advaniji if this is what he wants". The home...
