Incidents of violence like these are a price we are paying for our wrong policies that encourage illegal migration. I had submitted my report (one that had raised concerns on illegal migration and had generated a lot of controversy) way back in 1999. The people of Assam were with me but Congress MPs from there petitioned the President then to have me recalled. It took six years for the IMDT Act to be struck down after my report was submitted. I recall how Braj Kumar Nehru had in his autobiography mentioned that the old Congress valued national interest but the party later began giving priority to party interests. Once Tarun Gogoi became the CM, he tried to turn the clock back by insisting there is no illegal migration. The only consolation is...
