Modi's intemperate verbal attacks are finding less takers, it doesn't augur well for the BJP

If events of the past week are any indication, get ready for some real below-the-belt action in Gujarat. Notwithstanding Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's repeated refrain that his party would not cash in on the communal divide in Gujarat, and the state BJP's claim that the gaurav yatra's focus was on their government's performance in the last four years, the journey of pride has left no doubts on what the saffron brigade is up to. Chief minister Narendra Modi was at his rabble-rousing best before the swelling, largely stage-managed crowds during the inaugural two days of the yatra, as he took indelicate potshots at Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and the minorities.

Modi has given clear signals that one of the BJP's planks at the hustings will be an unabashed anti-Muslim babble. Godhra would be raked up and post-Godhra violence would be defended. The Christian religion and the Italian origins of Congress president Sonia Gandhi would be targeted, while minorities would be intimidated and ridiculed to whip up Hindu sentiments. All this in the name of Sardar Patel and the Pride...
