It's now clear that M.K. Stalin is Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi's most favoured son. And the public proclamation of this fact was made without much finesse. On September 19, the DMK high command issued a directive to its cadres and functionaries not to have any truck with M.K. Azhagiri, the second son of the chief minister. In the '80s, the eldest son, M.K. Muthu, was declared persona non grata in the DMK. An angered Muthu joined Jayalalitha's aiadmk and has been in political wilderness since.

The latest coup has left the youngest son and Chennai's mayor M.K. Stalin as the heir apparent. The move against Azhagiri has resulted in some churning within the party's southern Tamil Nadu units. DMK workers close to Azhagiri have openly defied the diktats of the high command and indulged in arson to express their solidarity with the prodigal son.
