The former IPTA folk balladeer Bhupen Hazarika, now fighting on a BJP ticket, is the only glamour boy in Assam’s Lok Sabha poll arena. And the saffronites could well be proud of the coup that got him into the fold. As expected, the 78-year-old singer, who once leaned heavily to the Left and who has over 200 popular political compositions to his credit, is drawing the crowds as he sets out to campaign in different pockets around Guwahati, the seat he’s contesting. But it may not be a cakewalk for this Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner, pitted as he is against the veteran Bhrigu Phukan, one of the protagonists of the anti-foreigner uprising in the state. Phukan has just dumped the NCP to return to his parent party, the AGP, after rival Prafulla Mahanta’s eclipse. In its heart of hearts, the BJP is wary of the voting behaviour of its own supporters who had resorted to open revolt in the streets of Guwahati as the party decided to opt for Hazarika by refusing to renominate sitting MP and Union...
