Penguin India can't stop crowing, despite having lost two senior editors to rival HarperCollins. Instead of the anticipated bloodbath in the ensuing headhunt for authors, rival publishers tamely made way for Penguin's new conquest. And how! Amitav Ghosh, the one author who has eluded Penguin for so long despite their blandishments, staying loyal to Ravi Dayal till death did them apart, fell ripely into their hands. Penguin outbid their rivals in an auction of Amitav's new work, a trilogy of novels, which he describes as "my most ambitious undertaking by far".
