With a new PM installed, can books on him be far behind? Barely a fortnight after Manmohan Singh was sworn in, Manas Publications has come out with what they call a "biography" of Singh. Manmohanomics—Journey to South Block: Life of an Indian Prime Minister. How do they do it? Search the net and put together his speeches? Not quite—the book is padded this time, not with speeches, but with a full draft of the upa's Common Minimum Programme, and a list of his council of ministers, to boot. Another creative touch was to hastily put together a chapter on 'What the Foreign Media Says'! "Our editors (he meant proofreaders, surely?) haven't slept for a week," the publisher boasted.


But publishers lament that 24/7 news channels are killing off the quickies. When Rupa's R.K. Mehra published his first quickie in 1964, he managed to sell over 2,40,000 copies. It was a book of children's poems paying tribute to Chacha Nehru,...
