CELEBRITYHOOD can have the strangest of origins. For Nick Leeson it began with his single handed success in wiping out the entire net worth, £850 million, of the 232-year-old merchant banking organisation, the Barings Group. Subsequently sentenced to six-and-a-half years in a Singapore prison, he continues to inspire much tabloid speculation. For example, is it true that Hugh Grant will play Leeson in a forthcoming film? Well, Rogue Trader, the fallen whiz kid's own account of the Barings' collapse, leaves little doubt that the authors have Hollywood in mind.

But while the movie may be some time coming, Rogue Trader is definitely written in a potential screenplay format, with his dramatic escape from Singapore as a prologue and a flashback which tells his story till his arrest in Frankfurt and subsequent trials. An ode to Gordon Gekko's anthem, "Greed is good," it is full of images and insights that would translate easily to the screen medium.
