Certainly there’s comedic potential in paunchy, mustachioed, socially inept and sexually frustrated male Indian engineers who stalk America’s discount malls as their families plot matrimony from back home. But Melvin Durai takes these elements, throws in a south Indian angle and still adds nothing to what we’ve known since Anurag Mathur’s shallow yet oddly engaging Inscrutable Americans (1991), thus far the definitive, easily digested reading on the subject of bewildered desis abroad. Durai is a humour blogger and the book reads exactly as if a mildly amusing set of blog posts has been stretched way beyond their capacity to entertain.  Reading this is a lot like spending an evening with a formerly witty bore. You may smile at first, but you’ll soon be cringing in anticipation of the next awful joke.
