Summer is funtime in New York. Tourists and foreigners fill the streets, New Yorkers step outdoors to play. South Asians celebrate, as at home, each in his own community. Last month, the Brihan Maharashtra Mandal rented the mammoth Madison Square Garden for its three-day convention, then scrambled to fill the 6,000 seats. But, with tickets at $150 a pop, only 3,000 Maharashtrian-Americans showed up. Renowned social worker Prakash Amte was to inaugurate the meet, famed playwright Vijay Tendulkar was to give the keynote address. At the last minute, however, Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi, invited by a rival group in the right-wing of the bmm, usurped the opening. Asked to speak for five minutes, Joshi spoke for 35, and hijacked the convention by announcing it inaugurated! Then Maharashtra’s new chief minister Sushilkumar Shinde declared that with Joshi’s advice and consent, he had donated Rs 10 lakh to the BMM.

Those two overlong speeches created a domino effect; even so, the next item went over by a full hour and guest of honour Amte’s interview was unceremoniously...
