It requires over Rs 3 lakh a year to maintain a tiger/lion in a zoo
AREA
Each tiger/lion needs a minimum area of 250 sq m
HYGIENE
Tigers/lions are prone to certain infectious diseases. Their area should be kept clean and free of insects.
MEDICAL FACILITIES
There should be a cat family specialist doctor in the zoo. Most Indian veterinarians are not trained to treat them.
FOOD
They need 10-12 kg of meat every day. It should be tested before being given.
WATER
Tigers need lots of water in summers. Since they often drink the same water they swim in, it needs regular cleaning
TEMPERATURE
They can’t survive in extreme temperatures. Fans or air coolers are required in extreme summers.
