PARKASH Singh Badal and company heaved a big sigh of relief when the seat- sharing talks between the Congress and the BSP failed. For, if the two parties had contested the elections on a joint platform, it would have been difficult for the SAD -BJP alliance to salvage many seats from the Doaba region, which has the highest number of scheduled caste votes.

But now, the BSP is all set to keep the committed Dalit voter away from stamping on the hand symbol. That's bad news for Bhattal. For the SAD -BJP combine is all set to reap the benefits of this split in the vote. Upper caste Jat Sikh votes coupled with Hindu votes in the urban areas will see many of the alliance candidates elected to the state assembly.

Besides, while the SAD -BJP combine is not answerable for the lack of development in the area during the last five years, Congress party stalwarts are facing the rough weather in the region.
