Apropos your cover story (Theory and Practice, Sep 28), your B-school rankings touched on a lot of points, but there was nothing about ‘entrepreneurship in recession’ as such. Would have loved to read about instances where B-school grads had come up with ideas of their own to beat the recession (in the true sense of putting their MBAs to work).

What’s surprising is the number of colleges people haven’t heard of popping up in the list. An institute like IRMA, which has a teacher-student ratio of 1:6 and a campus that’s among the best in India, has been ranked as low as 43. Are these rankings a true reflection of what an MBA college stands for? Of what its achievements are? Or how good its pedagogy and faculty are? Some of the colleges listed do not even occupy space greater than the half the area on which the hostels of IRMA stand (and IRMA has been given a score of 99 in infrastructure out of a total of 174). IRMA has had an illustrious history, mapped by some of society’s eminent people passing out from here. The sector the institute serves is a challenge in itself and no other institute has alumni in as diverse fields. I personally think magazines should be more responsible in arriving at rankings and not just resort to a wholesale treatment based on superficial parameters.

Outlook should change the parameters of judging ‘Best Colleges’. Let’s count the number of ‘immaculate’ and ‘tainted’ politicians they produce.

These rankings by MDRA seem to come with some preconceived notions. For the life of me, I can’t understand how IMS Noida could be ranked above IRMA, manage etc. Ranking a sectoral B-school with a general management B-school itself bespeaks a basic flaw in the methodology.
